About Our Fertilizer
Black soldier flies are a sub-tropical insect species. The larvae voraciously consume food waste, converting it into protein and other high-quality nutrients in its system. As the larvae fly feast, they produce an insect manure co-product, known as frass.
Our fertilizer is made from BSFL-derived frass – a natural, nutrient-rich co-product of insect farming. 2nd Nature is packed with essential nutrients that support healthy soil and plants.
Chitin is a natural polysaccharide found in the outer shell (exoskeleton) of BSFL, similar to cellulose in plants. As the larvae grow, they shed their exoskeleton which combines with the frass.
Research indicates chitin can encourage beneficial microbes and signal plants to activate their own protective responses, helping plants grow stronger and healthier.

2nd Nature BSFL Frass Plant Food is regenerative on multiple levels. Our BSFL frass acts as a nutrient-rich fertilizer that can improve soil health and promote plant growth.
By upcycling food waste into frass and other products through BSFL farming, we divert this waste stream from landfill and low-value compost. In doing so, we help reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that would have otherwise been created.
Mix into soil or top-dress around plants. Water in after application. Apply every 4-6 weeks during active growth.

Yes. All 2nd Nature fertilizers are natural making them pet and pollinator friendly when used as directed.
Our in-house trial suggests that soils treated with 2nd Nature may hold moisture longer, helping support plants between waterings.
